Description
A celebration of the talents and wisdom of elderly American musicians, singers, and story-tellers, who perform not for fame or fortune but to preserve and share their culture. The program features Tommy Jarrell, 82-year-old fiddler and bootlegger with Appalachian roots; Mississippi blues guitarist Jack Owens, and Sam Chapman and family--including Memphis Slim and Charley Patton--on the origins of blues; 80-year-old Janie Hunter of Johns Island, South Carolina with stories, songs and plays of the "praise houses" of the slave era; 91-year-old Nimrod Workman, ex-coal miner, union organizer and balladeer from West Virginia; Chester Wooten and the Sacred Harp Singers with their singing school for multi-part "shape-note hymnody and how their clan gatherings from Georgia to Texas renewed family ties; and briefly, the famous Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
